"India suffers massive blow": Lakshya Sen to miss Thomas Cup semifinal

In a major blow to India’s campaign at the BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals 2026, top-ranked men’s singles star Lakshya Sen has been ruled out of the crucial semifinal encounter against France. The news was officially confirmed by Sanjay Mishra, General Secretary of the Badminton Association of India (BAI), who stated that the decision was taken as a necessary precautionary measure to protect the athlete.

The injury stems from a physically grueling quarterfinal match where Lakshya Sen faced off against higher-ranked Chou Tien Chen. During the high-intensity clash, which lasted an hour and 28 minutes, Sen’s reliance on extensive diving to keep points alive resulted in an impact injury to his elbow. While he heroically won the match 18-21, 22-20, 21-17, the physical toll proved to be significant, necessitating immediate medical attention and rest.

BAI’s Strategy for Recovery and Team Outlook

The medical team has placed Sen under close observation to monitor his recovery. The primary objective behind sitting him out for the semifinal is to provide the star shuttler with the best possible chance of being match-fit for the final, provided the Indian team successfully secures a victory against France today. The BAI has expressed confidence in the rest of the squad, emphasizing that the focus remains on maintaining the team’s momentum in the tournament.

Lakshya Sen Injury

Despite the absence of their top-ranked singles player, the Indian camp remains optimistic. The team management has confirmed that they are providing all necessary support for his rehabilitation. The goal is to manage the player’s workload effectively, ensuring that he does not aggravate the condition while the team pushes forward in their quest for the title.

Revised Team Lineup and Strategy

With Lakshya Sen sidelined for the semifinal, the Indian team will rely on its depth to navigate the challenge posed by France.

The men’s singles fixtures will now be spearheaded by Ayush Shetty, Kidambi Srikanth, and HS Prannoy, all of whom have been training intensely for this stage of the competition.

The doubles contingent, which remains vital to India’s prospects, will feature the formidable pairing of Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, alongside M. Arjun and A. Hariharan. This revised lineup is geared toward maintaining tactical flexibility and aggression, qualities that have defined India’s performance throughout the Thomas Cup thus far. The team is currently focused on executing their game plan and ensuring that the absence of one key player does not disrupt their overall strategic cohesion.
