North East India Celebrates New Sporting Milestone As PM Modi Inaugurates BCCI Indoor Cricket Academies

In a major milestone for Indian sports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated six new BCCI Indoor Cricket Academies across the North-East from the newly constructed state-of-the-art facility at the Sikkim Cricket Ground in Rangpo. This initiative marks a transformative step in the BCCI’s ongoing commitment to democratizing access to high-quality sporting infrastructure and ensuring the North-East remains a vital part of the national cricketing journey.

The inauguration ceremony highlighted the Board’s strategic vision to bring North-East states on par with older, established cricketing regions. By investing in modern infrastructure, the BCCI is not only providing professional tools to aspiring cricketers in remote areas but also fostering a pipeline of talent that will eventually compete at the domestic and international levels, effectively changing the sporting landscape of the region forever.

Sikkim’s State-of-the-Art Cricket Landmark

The crown jewel of this rollout is the new facility in Mining, Rangpo, Sikkim. Built at a cost of Rs 23 crore, this cricket academy stands as a testament to modern engineering and sports planning.

Located within the Sikkim Cricket Association (SICA) ground premises, it is designed to meet international training standards, offering a year-round training environment that was previously unavailable in this mountainous region.

World-Class Amenities for Aspiring Stars

The newly inaugurated academies are far more than just indoor practice nets. They are equipped with comprehensive modern amenities to ensure holistic athlete development. The Sikkim facility, for instance, features:

  • Advanced net practice facilities with bowling machines.
  • A high-performance gymnasium for physical conditioning.
  • A swimming pool for recovery and hydrotherapy.
  • Modern infrastructure to support long-term training camps.

High-Profile Presence: BCCI and ICC Leadership

The virtual inauguration was attended by an elite delegation of sports administrators, underscoring the importance of the project. ICC Chairman and former BCCI Secretary Jay Shah led the presence alongside prominent BCCI figures, including President Mithun Manhas, Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia, Vice President Rajeev Shukla, Joint Secretary Prabhtej Bhatia, Treasurer A. Raghuram Bhat, and IPL Chairman Arun Singh Dhumal. Their attendance confirms the BCCI’s high-level focus on regional integration.

BCCI Indoor Cricket Academies

Bridging the Gap in Regional Cricket

For years, the North-East faced significant challenges in talent development due to terrain, weather, and lack of specialized indoor facilities. These six new academies directly address these hurdles.

By providing indoor setups, the BCCI ensures that cricketers can continue their skill development regardless of weather conditions, significantly reducing the “exposure gap” between players in the North-East and those in traditional cricketing hubs like Mumbai or Bangalore.

Developing Talent Beyond the Metros

The broader objective behind this expansion is to tap into the raw potential of the North-Eastern youth. Historically, cricket talent in this region often struggled to find adequate guidance. With these BCCI-standard facilities, local coaches and players can now access advanced training methodologies.

This initiative is expected to boost participation rates and professionalization of the game across the seven sister states.

Transforming the Regional Sporting Landscape

The inauguration is more than just a ceremony; it is a clear statement of intent for the future of Indian cricket. By decentralizing professional infrastructure, the BCCI is ensuring that the next generation of Indian cricket stars could very well come from the hills of Sikkim or the plains of the North-East.

This investment in the future serves as a blueprint for how professional sporting bodies can actively participate in nation-building through sport.
