For many years, the Mizo National Front (MNF) has dominated Mizoram politics. Its roots are in the state’s historical struggle for autonomy and self-governance. The MNF, under the leadership of figures like Pu Laldenga and, more recently, Zoramthanga, has been instrumental in determining the political course of the state.

The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), which became a recognized political party only in 2019, won 27 seats in the December 2023 assembly elections, boosting its total from 8 seats in the 2018 polls. The Mizo National Front (MNF), led by the previous chief minister Zoramthanga, was overthrown by it.
After a fiercely contested fight, the MNF won the lone parliamentary seat in the 2019 Mizoram general elections. State election dynamics, on the other hand, have been more erratic, with coalition politics frequently having a big say in who forms the government.
