Meghalaya saw a fiercely contested general election in 2019, with the NPP making notable progress and winning one parliamentary seat. Because Meghalayan politics are competitive, the Indian National Congress was able to hold onto its stronghold in the state by gaining the other parliamentary seat.

Regional parties dominate the state’s political landscape, with the National People’s Party (NPP) becoming a major force in recent years. The NPP has made a name for itself by opposing the established supremacy of parties like the Indian National Congress and the United Democratic Party (UDP), led by figures like Conrad Sangma.
