India Unveils Major $175 Million Growth Boost for Seychelles

India has announced a $175 million economic assistance package for Seychelles, reaffirming its commitment to deepening ties with the Indian Ocean nation. The announcement followed high-level bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Seychelles President Patrick Herminie in New Delhi, where both leaders discussed development priorities, regional security, and long-term cooperation.

Officials described the package as part of India’s broader outreach to Indian Ocean partners, aimed at promoting stability, sustainable growth, and people-centric development. The initiative is expected to strengthen Seychelles’ economic foundations while supporting regional peace and cooperation.

Structure of the Economic Assistance Package

The assistance package includes a $125 million line of credit and a $50 million grant, designed to support priority development projects identified by the Seychelles government. Indian officials said the focus is on sectors that deliver direct social and economic benefits. Key areas of support include:

  • Social housing and urban development
  • Electric mobility and sustainable transport
  • Vocational training and skill development
  • Healthcare infrastructure and public health services
  • Defence and maritime security projects

The projects are expected to create employment opportunities, enhance skills among youth, and improve access to essential services across the island nation.

Maritime Security Emerges as a Key Priority for Both Nations

Maritime security and defence cooperation featured prominently in the discussions. Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s continued support to Seychelles in strengthening its maritime capabilities and safeguarding its territorial waters.

Seychelles was welcomed as a full member of the Colombo Security Conclave, a regional framework focused on maritime safety and security in the Indian Ocean. Leaders said this step would improve coordination, information sharing, and joint responses to shared security challenges.

New Bilateral Agreements Expand Ocean and Scientific Cooperation

During the visit, India and Seychelles signed seven bilateral agreements, expanding cooperation in ocean-related and technical fields. These include agreements on ocean observation, maritime scientific research, capacity building, and data sharing.

India also announced support for setting up a hydrographic unit in Seychelles, which will enhance maritime mapping, navigation safety, and scientific research. Officials noted that this cooperation would contribute to safer sea lanes and improved regional maritime awareness.

Trade Digital Innovation and People Centric Growth Take Shape Ahead
