India and Canada Turn the Page with Historic Uranium Deal and Bold Trade Push

India Canada agreed to a series of significant economic and strategic measures on Monday, including a long-term uranium supply deal, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held high-level talks in New Delhi aimed at restoring momentum in bilateral relations.

The announcements mark a turning point after nearly three years of diplomatic strain between the two countries. Both leaders signalled their intention to move beyond recent tensions and focus on strengthening cooperation in trade, energy security, defence, education and emerging technologies.

Landmark Uranium Agreement to Boost India’s Energy Security

One of the most prominent outcomes of the meeting was a long-term uranium supply agreement between Canadian mining giant Cameco and India. Prime Minister Modi described the deal as “landmark” during a joint press statement, emphasizing its importance for India’s growing energy needs.

The agreement is expected to support India’s civil nuclear energy programme and strengthen long-term energy security. Officials said the partnership reflects deepening cooperation in clean and reliable energy sources as both countries seek to balance development goals with sustainability commitments.

Fast-Tracked Trade Pact with Year-End Deadline

Prime Minister Carney announced that India and Canada have agreed to accelerate negotiations toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), with a target to conclude talks by the end of this year.

The two sides also set an ambitious goal of increasing bilateral trade to around $50 billion by 2030. Analysts say the renewed urgency reflects global economic uncertainties and efforts by both countries to diversify markets and reduce overdependence on traditional trade partners.

Cooperation Expands to Critical Minerals, AI and Space Technology

Beyond trade and nuclear cooperation, the leaders agreed to enhance collaboration in strategic sectors including critical minerals, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing and space research.

Officials noted that securing supply chains for critical minerals has become increasingly important amid global competition. Both governments also highlighted opportunities for joint innovation in emerging technologies, including AI-driven applications and space-sector partnerships.

Education and Student Mobility Take Centre Stage

Education featured prominently in the discussions, particularly given the large number of Indian students studying in Canada. Both governments announced plans to expand academic partnerships, facilitate greater student and researcher mobility, and strengthen mutual recognition of qualifications.

Officials said enhanced cooperation in higher education would deepen people-to-people ties while contributing to research collaboration and skill development in high-growth sectors.

Defence and Maritime Dialogue Revived After Diplomatic Strain

India and Canada also agreed to relaunch a structured defence dialogue and increase cooperation in maritime and broader security matters. The move signals a strategic alignment that extends beyond economic engagement.

The relationship had been under strain since 2023, when then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau referred to “credible allegations” linking India to the killing of a Sikh separatist leader on Canadian soil. Monday’s discussions indicate a deliberate effort by both sides to stabilise and rebuild institutional mechanisms for engagement.

Carney’s Indo-Pacific Outreach Continues After Delhi Talks

India was the first leg of Prime Minister Carney’s broader Indo-Pacific tour aimed at diversifying Canada’s economic and strategic partnerships beyond North America. After concluding engagements in Delhi and Mumbai, Carney is scheduled to visit Australia and Japan.

In Australia, he is expected to hold talks with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and address Parliament. His final stop in Tokyo will include meetings focused on clean energy, advanced manufacturing, food security and critical mineral cooperation.
