PM Modi in Dehradun: Hails UCC & Abrogation of Article 370 on Ambedkar Jayanti

Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the 135th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on Tuesday by celebrating the realization of the architect of the Constitution’s vision through landmark reforms. During a high-profile visit to the hill state, the Prime Minister inaugurated the ₹12,000 crore Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor and lauded Uttarakhand for becoming the first state to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a move he described as a fulfillment of constitutional expectations.

The Prime Minister’s visit began with a massive 12-kilometer roadshow that drew thousands of residents despite the heat, leading him to apologize for a one-hour delay in the proceedings. “The enthusiasm of the people made it difficult for the car to move,” Modi remarked, noting that the overwhelming reception served as a “new inspiration.” He linked the day’s events to the dignity of the Constitution, stating that the abrogation of Article 370 has finally allowed the Indian Constitution to be fully applicable across every inch of the nation.

A Milestone for Connectivity: The Delhi-Dehradun Corridor

The newly inaugurated six-lane economic corridor is set to revolutionize travel between the national capital and Uttarakhand.

  • Travel Time Slash: The 213-km access-controlled corridor reduces travel time from over six hours to just two and a half hours.
  • Regional Impact: Traversing Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, the project is designed to accelerate tourism and industrial growth across the “Double-Engine” government’s priority zones.
  • Eco-Friendly Design: The project features a 12-km elevated wildlife corridor—one of the longest in Asia—and multiple elephant underpasses to minimize human-animal conflict.

Honoring Babasaheb’s Legacy of Social Justice

PM Modi tied his government’s policy achievements directly to the mission of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

  • Restoring Dignity: The Prime Minister emphasized that the past decade has focused on “restoring the dignity of the Constitution,” particularly for the deprived and exploited.
  • Modernization: He noted that Babasaheb was a strong advocate for modern infrastructure and industrialization as a means to achieve social justice, a vision reflected in the new expressway.

Uttarakhand as the UCC Trailblazer

The Prime Minister praised the state for its “divine task” of implementing the Uniform Civil Code, which officially completed its first full year of enforcement earlier in 2026.

  • National Example: “Uttarakhand has shown a way to the nation,” Modi stated, highlighting that the UCC ensures equality and social harmony as envisioned by the Constitution.
  • Legal Reform: The code has digitized processes for marriage and inheritance, with over 5 lakh registrations completed in its first year.

Sovereignty and the End of Article 370

Addressing the integration of the country, the Prime Minister highlighted the finality of the 2019 constitutional amendment.

  • Full Application: He asserted that after the abrogation of Article 370, the “Constitution of India is now fully applicable across the entire nation,” including formerly Maoist-affected regions.
  • Security & Peace: The move was framed as a cornerstone of national security that has brought long-term stability to Jammu and Kashmir.
Spiritual Connection and "Maa Daat Kali"

Before the inauguration, the Prime Minister performed Darshan and Pooja at the Jai Maa Daat Kali Temple near Dehradun.

  • Divine Blessings: Modi credited the blessings of the deity for the successful completion of the corridor, which includes a dedicated 370-meter tunnel near the temple site.
  • The Decade of Uttarakhand: Reiterating his previous statement, he declared that the third decade of this century belongs to Uttarakhand’s development and progress.
Festive Greetings: Baisakhi and Beyond

The Prime Minister extended his warm wishes for the diverse cultural festivals being celebrated across India.

  • Cultural Unity: He greeted the nation for Baisakhi, Puthandu, and Bohag Bihu, emphasizing the spirit of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.”
  • Chardham Yatra: He also noted that the Badrinath and Kedarnath Yatras are set to begin shortly, with the new corridor expected to facilitate a record number of pilgrims.
