Nepal Cracks Down: 7,000 Betting Apps Banned Nationwide
In a historic move to secure the nation’s digital borders, the Government of Nepal has officially formalised a total, nationwide ban on all online betting platforms. This aggressive crackdown, led by Prime Minister Balen Shah, marks the end of an era of unregulated gambling, aiming to stop illegal financial transactions and protect citizens from the “cycle of debt.”
As of April 2026, the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has already blocked over 7,000 websites and applications, signaling a zero-tolerance approach to offshore gambling operators.

Following a cabinet decision on March 27, 2026, the government initiated a massive technical takedown.
- 24-Hour Implementation: Internet Service Providers (ISPs) were given a strict one-day window to block access to gambling URLs or face the loss of their operating licenses.
- Payment Restrictions: Authorities have partnered with digital wallets like Khalti and eSewa to freeze transactions linked to unauthorized betting agents.

- Social Media Cleanup: The government is now monitoring platforms like Facebook and Instagram to remove predatory betting advertisements targeting Nepali youth.
Severe Penalties: Fines, Jail, and Asset Seizure
Under the Muluki Criminal Code (Section 125), betting is a serious criminal offense. The 2026 enforcement rules introduce strict consequences for both operators and users:
- Imprisonment: Offenders face up to one year of jail time.
- Financial Loss: Fines range from Rs 10,000 to Rs 30,000, with full confiscation of the “stake” amount and all earnings.
- Device Seizure: Electronic devices (smartphones and laptops) used for betting will be seized by the police.
- User Tracking: The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) is now identifying individuals registered on apps like 1xBet using their phone numbers and KYC data.

Why Now? Economic and Social Security
The government cited three critical reasons for the sudden escalation of this ban:
- Stopping Capital Flight: Billions of Nepali Rupees were flowing out of the country to offshore operators via informal Hundi channels.
- Protecting Remittance: Authorities want to ensure that money sent home by migrant workers supports families rather than being lost to gambling addiction.
- The “India Spillover”: After India outlawed real-money gaming in 2025, many operators flooded the Nepali market. This ban acts as a defensive shield against that “spillover.”
The Casino Exception: Tourists Only
It is important to note that while online betting is dead, physical gambling remains a regulated industry—but only for outsiders.
- Biometric Entry: Land-based casinos in Kathmandu and Bhairahawa are now under 24/7 surveillance with mandatory biometric checks to ensure no Nepali citizens enter.
- Social Tax: A new 2% profit tax from these casinos is being diverted to fund social causes and addiction recovery programs.
