Voices from Geneva: Baloch Activist Exposes Rising Human Rights Crisis at UNHRC
At the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, the deteriorating humanitarian landscape in Balochistan took center stage. Representing the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), leading activist Sabiha Baloch delivered a compelling testimony on April 7, 2026, detailed by The Balochistan Post, highlighting a systemic pattern of state-sponsored abuses that continue to destabilize the region.
The address shed light on a paradoxical reality: while Balochistan is promoted as a hub for massive international development projects, the local population remains trapped in a cycle of fear and administrative overreach.

ToggleSystemic Abuses and the "Disappearance" Crisis
The most pressing issue raised before the Council was the epidemic of enforced disappearances. Sabiha Baloch alleged that individuals are routinely abducted without legal grounds, leaving families in a state of perpetual grief and legal limbo.
- The “Kill and Dump” Pattern: The activist pointed to the recurring recovery of disfigured bodies, suggesting these are not isolated criminal acts but part of a systematic “extrajudicial” trend.

- Lack of Information: In many cases, the whereabouts of the disappeared remain unknown for years, with state institutions providing little to no accountability.
Silencing Dissent through Legal Intimidation
The testimony emphasized that the state is increasingly using its legal machinery to stifle peaceful advocacy and civil society.
- Targeting Professionals: Journalists, lawyers, students, and human rights defenders are reportedly subjected to arbitrary arrests and harassment.
- Counter-Terrorism Laws: Baloch argued that stringent anti-terror legislation is being weaponized to prosecute dissenters rather than address actual security threats.
- Detention of Leaders: Key figures of the BYC, including prominent leader Mahrang Baloch, remain in extended detention, a move seen by activists as an attempt to decapitate the rights movement.
The "Foreign Investment" Paradox
A central theme of the speech was the disconnect between economic development and human rights. Despite the province being a focal point for foreign-backed infrastructure and resource extraction projects, the local populace faces:
- Heightened Insecurity: Increased military presence around project sites often correlates with a rise in local rights violations.
- Economic Exclusion: Local communities claim they are marginalized from the benefits of these projects while bearing the brunt of the security crackdown.

A Call for Global Intervention
Concluding her remarks, Sabiha Baloch issued a formal plea to the international community:
- Independent Investigation: She urged the United Nations to launch an impartial, fact-finding mission into the conditions in Balochistan.
- Restoring Trust: The activist warned that without international oversight, the erosion of public trust in state institutions would only deepen, further destabilizing the region.
