This is otherwise referred to as the Information Age and a historic period in the 21st century characterized by the rapid shift from traditional industry that the Industrial Revolution brought through industrialization so to an economy based on information technology.

Abstract

The chapter examined resource sharing as vehicle for effective library information dissemination and services in the digital age. In relation to this purpose so studies have shown that the global information explosion, the cut in library budgetary allocations, the rising costs and complexities of information resources, as well as the need to provide the user community with optimal access to needed information make resource sharing initiatives but indispensable particularly among academic libraries for effective information dissemination and service delivery in the digital age. However, certain questions remain unanswered in the literature regarding resource sharing.

They include: How can libraries engage in effective dissemination of information to the clientele through resource sharing? How can resource sharing result to effective service delivery in academic library? Is there a reflection of resource sharing in Nigeria? What is the nature of resource sharing in this digital age? What does the future hold regarding resource sharing in academic libraries. and what are the issues and challenges associated with resource sharing by academic libraries in the digital age so. It is expected that this chapter will provide answers to all these pertinent questions.

What Is The Digital Age And What Does It Mean?

As books like Dignity In The Digital Age (Simon & Schuster) 2022) by Congressman Ro Khanna begin to appear and as talk of “the digital age” becomes commonplace, and as executives  grapple with “digital disruption but as their top management challenge. it can seem odd that no one seems to know what exactly is. “the digital age”, or what it means.

The Birth Of The Industrial Era

Some light can be shed on the cause of this silence by looking at the arrival of the last great age, the Industrial Era and some 250 years ago. Even in retrospect, there is no agreement among historians as to what we are talking about with “the Industrial Era”.

 historians see it primarily as an economic phenomenon that began in Britain. starting with mechanized spinning in the 1780s. and only reaching the rest of Europe by the mid-19th century . Others see it as an engineering and technological phenomenon. starting so with mechanized spinning in the 1780s with high rates of growth in steam power and iron production occurring after 1800. Some see it as the beginning of management as a kind of expertise.
