ChatGPT’s Ghibli-Style AI Feature Goes Viral

Social media is flooded with Studio Ghibli-style memes, scenes, and photos, all thanks to ChatGPT‘s latest AI feature. Everyone is embracing this viral trend, from casual users to businesses, influencers, political figures, and leaders.

Initially, the feature was exclusive to ChatGPT premium users, but OpenAI has now extended access to free users as well.

On March 26, OpenAI introduced the Ghibli-style image generation, announcing, “4o image generation has arrived. It’s beginning to roll out today in ChatGPT and Sora to all Plus, Pro, Team, and Free users.”

The launch sparked an internet frenzy, with users transforming their real-life photos into Ghibli-style animated images. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman even commented on X, revealing that the surge in usage was overwhelming their GPU resources.

“It’s super fun seeing people love images in ChatGPT. But our GPUs are melting. We are going to temporarily introduce some rate limits while we work on making it more efficient. Hopefully won’t be long! ChatGPT free tier will get 3 generations per day soon,” Altman stated.

While many users enjoyed the AI’s take on movie posters and iconic moments, a significant number of Studio Ghibli fans criticized the trend, calling it a form of plagiarism.

One user shared an old interview clip of Studio Ghibli’s co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki, reacting to AI-generated animation, writing, “Since this utter garbage is trending, we should take a look at what Hayao Miyazaki said about machine-created art.”

In the video, Miyazaki expressed strong disapproval, saying, “I am utterly disgusted. If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.”
