T20 WC India produced a sensational performance under pressure to defeat England by seven runs in a breathtaking T20 World Cup semi final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday. In a contest filled with relentless hitting dramatic fielding and nerve testing moments the defending champions held their composure to secure a place in the 2026 final.
The match turned into a spectacular run fest as both teams combined for 499 runs the highest total in a men’s T20 World Cup match. Sanju Samson led India’s batting charge with a stunning knock while Jacob Bethell fought valiantly for England but India’s bowlers and fielders ultimately sealed a memorable victory.

Sanju Samson once again proved his value in a crucial match with a breathtaking innings of 89 from just 42 balls. The right handed batter struck eight fours and seven towering sixes to dominate England’s bowling attack.
Samson started aggressively and attacked Jofra Archer early in the innings giving India quick momentum. After being dropped at 15 by England captain Harry Brook he made England pay by continuing his fearless stroke play and bringing up his half century in only 26 balls.
His knock provided the perfect platform for India’s big total.

India’s powerful batting line up delivered a spectacular performance to post 253 for 7 after being asked to bat first. The Wankhede pitch offered excellent conditions for batting and India took full advantage.

Samson and Ishan Kishan added a rapid 97 run stand in just 45 balls which accelerated the scoring during the middle overs. Later Samson combined with Shivam Dube for another quick partnership of 43 runs in 22 balls.
These partnerships ensured that India maintained a high scoring rate throughout the innings and set England a daunting target.
England begin strong chase despite early setbacks
Chasing a massive target of 254 England began their innings aggressively but suffered early setbacks. Hardik Pandya removed Phil Salt early while Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Harry Brook with the help of a brilliant catch by Axar Patel.
Jos Buttler looked in good touch and scored 25 from 17 balls before Varun Chakaravarthy bowled him with a clever googly.
Despite losing wickets England kept the run rate high and reached 100 runs in just 8.1 overs which became the second fastest team hundred in T20 World Cup knockout history.
Jacob Bethell century keeps England in the fight
Jacob Bethell delivered a stunning innings that almost turned the match in England’s favour. The young batter launched a fearless counter attack and smashed three consecutive sixes early in his innings.
Bethell went on to score a magnificent 105 from 48 balls including eight fours and seven sixes. He also built an important 77 run partnership with Will Jacks to keep England firmly in the contest.
His aggressive batting ensured the match remained tense until the final stages.
India hold nerve to set up final against New Zealand
The match eventually came down to the final over with England still hoping to complete the record chase. However India held their nerve thanks to disciplined bowling and brilliant fielding.
Axar Patel produced one of the best fielding moments of the match when he stopped a powerful boundary shot and helped complete a relay catch with Shivam Dube. Jacob Bethell was later run out in the closing stages which effectively ended England’s hopes.
India’s bowlers especially Jasprit Bumrah controlled the pressure moments at the death to seal the victory.
