At the US Open in2024, Rohan Bopanna hopes to complete a Grand Slam, while Sumit Nagal aims to make history.

Today, August 26, is the scheduled start date of the 144th US Open. In the men’s singles competition, Novak Djokovic is still the overwhelming favorite, while in the women’s singles competition, all eyes will be on Coco Gauff. Rohan Bopanna and Sumit Nagal will be important among Indians.

Today, August 26, marks the start of the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the year, which will include four Indian players. In addition to being the only player from India to compete in the men’s singles, Sumit Nagal is expected to make history. This year, Nagal will play in four Grand Slam events, making history as the first male Indian tennis player to do so in a singles competition since 2019.

The last male tennis players from India to compete in four events in a calendar year were Prajnesh Gunneswaran in 2019 and Yuki Bhambri in 2018. Returning to Nagal, he currently holds the 73rd spot in the ATP rankings. He will go up against the 40th-ranked Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands. Regarding his Grand Slam performance for this year, Sumit Nagal advanced to the Australian Open’s second round.

But in the opening stages of the French Open and Wimbledon Championships, he was eliminated. Nagal too failed to make it past the opening round of the Olympics in Paris.

Three further Indian players, Rohan Bopanna, Yuki Bhambri, and N Sriram Balaji, will compete in the men’s doubles category. Even though Bopanna is seeded second and Matthew Ebden of Australia placed second in the most recent US Open, all three of these players will be playing with different partners. On August 28, men’s doubles matches at the US Open will get underway.
