Assembly Election 2026 Schedule
According to the official press note released on March 19, 2026, the elections will be conducted in phases:
- Assam, Kerala, Puducherry – Polling on April 9, 2026
- Tamil Nadu – Polling on April 23, 2026
- West Bengal – Multi-phase polling
- Counting of Votes – May 4, 2026
The Election Commission has already issued notifications for Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry.
Postal Ballot Facility: Major Reform in 2026 Elections
One of the most significant highlights of the 2026 Assembly Elections is the expansion of postal voting to ensure inclusive participation.
Who Can Vote via Postal Ballot?
The Election Commission has allowed the following categories of voters to use postal ballots:
- Senior Citizens (85+)
Voters aged 85 years and above can now vote from home using postal ballots.
- Persons with Disabilities (PwDs)
Registered PwD voters listed in electoral rolls can also use this facility.
- Essential Service Workers
Voters working in essential sectors such as:
- Healthcare
- Fire services
- Electricity
- Transport
- Aviation
- Ambulance services
can apply for postal ballots.
- Election Duty Staff
Officials deployed on election duty will vote through designated facilitation centers.
- Media Personnel
Authorized journalists covering election day are also eligible.
This move ensures that no eligible voter is left out due to physical or professional constraints.
How to Apply for Postal Ballot?
Eligible voters must follow a simple process:
- Fill out Form 12D
- Submit it to the Booth Level Officer (BLO) within 5 days of election notification
- Polling officials will collect votes directly from homes (for eligible categories)
For service voters, ballots are sent electronically through the Electronically Transmitted Postal Ballot System (ETPBS).
Important Deadline for Postal Votes
- Postal ballots must reach the Returning Officer by
8:00 AM on May 4, 2026 (counting day)
Failure to meet this deadline may result in the vote not being counted.
