Following Wednesday’s devastating earthquake in Taiwan, there are reports of two Indians going missing. A man and a lady who are missing from India were last spotted near epicenter in Taroko Gorge.

Search efforts are in progress to find them, according to those with knowledge of the situation. Taiwan was shook early in the day by an earthquake that was reportedly the strongest in 25 years, leaving at least nine people dead and over 1,000 injured.

The epicentre of the earthquake was located off the shore of Hualien County, a rural and mountainous area where some buildings had their ground floors crushed and tilted at extreme angles.

In Taipei, the nation’s capital, tiles collapsed from older buildings, forcing schools to evacuate their pupils and provide them with yellow safety helmets. Taipei is just over 150 kilometers (93 miles) away.

As the aftershocks persisted, some kids were observed shielding themselves from falling debris with textbooks, according to the AP.

In Hualien, rescue personnel spread out to search for possible stragglers and used excavators to stabilize collapsed structures. As authorities learned of more persons in distress and sought to identify or release them, the number of those missing, trapped, or stranded fluctuated often.

The fire agency reported that some 70 workers who were stuck at two rock quarries were safe, but the roads leading to them had been harmed by falling rocks. On Thursday, there were plans to airlift six workers.

I’ve become used to seismic activity. However, I was terrified of an earthquake for the first time today. It was the earthquake that woke me up. I’ve never experienced such strong shaking before,” Taipei resident Hsien-hsuen Keng said to the agency.

In addition to damaging roads, bridges, and tunnels, the earthquake and its aftershocks resulted in 24 landslides. According to the article, there was minimal damage to parts of Taoyuan’s main airport, which is located just south of Taipei, as well as the national assembly and a school that was converted during World War II.
