"Ganga Flows Through Soul of Bengal": PM Modi Connects with Locals in Kolkata Amid Election Heat
West Bengal, Kolkata : Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his day in Kolkata on Friday with a serene visit to the banks of the Hooghly River, taking a brief but symbolic respite from the high-octane political atmosphere currently engulfing West Bengal. Amid the fervor of the 2026 Assembly Elections, the Prime Minister met with local boatmen and morning walkers, grounding his campaign in a moment of cultural reflection while reaffirming his commitment to the state’s development.
In a poignant post on X, PM Modi connected the city’s spiritual identity with its political future, stating, “For every Bengali, the Ganga occupies a very special place. One can say that the Ganga flows through the soul of Bengal.” He shared photographs of his excursion, noting that the river’s divine waters carry the “timeless spirit of an entire civilisation,” framing his visit as an opportunity to express gratitude while looking toward the state’s prosperity.

ToggleCapturing the Spirit: A Personal Touch on the Hooghly
Stepping away from the political podium, the Prime Minister embraced a more personal side of his visit by trying his hand at photography. Capturing the architectural majesty of the Vidyasagar Setu and the iconic Howrah Bridge, he shared his perspective with the public.
This moment of observation allowed for a distinct contrast to the rigorous election rallies, highlighting a blend of reverence for West Bengal’s heritage and the urgency of the upcoming political shifts.

A "Storm of Change" Across the State
While the morning began with tranquility, the Prime Minister’s broader schedule was dominated by the intensity of the Assembly Elections. Addressing election rallies, most notably in Krishnanagar, PM Modi described a palpable “storm of change” sweeping through West Bengal.
He urged first-time voters and the youth of the state to play a decisive role in the upcoming polls, emphasizing that the desire for a new political direction is being echoed by the public across all sides.
Holding the Ruling Party Accountable
The Prime Minister used his platform to launch a sharp critique of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). Accusing the party of undermining the rights of women in the state, PM Modi alleged that the TMC had obstructed progress by voting against the Constitution Amendment Bill intended to implement women’s reservation effectively by 2029.
He framed the election as a critical opportunity for the electorate to hold the government accountable for what he characterized as years of “oppression.”
Addressing the Rights of Women
In a direct appeal to the state’s female electorate, the Prime Minister spoke of Bengal as “the land where Durga is worshipped.”
He argued that the insults to women’s honor inflicted under the current administration would be addressed through the ballot box. By promising that “enough is enough,” he positioned the upcoming election as a definitive moment for women to reclaim their rights and ensure justice, urging them to lead the movement for political transition.

Record Turnout and the Youth Factor
The ongoing election process in West Bengal has been marked by significant civic participation. Districts have consistently crossed the 90% voter turnout mark, a statistic that underscores the high stakes of the 2026 cycle.
The Prime Minister specifically highlighted the role of first-time voters, framing their involvement as a “front” against the status quo and a driving force in the state’s political evolution.
The Road to the Results
As the state moves toward the final phases of polling on April 29, the political temperature remains at an all-time high. The Prime Minister expressed strong confidence that when the votes are finally tallied ten days after the initial phases, the electoral outcome will signify a new beginning for the state.
The results, set to be announced on May 4, will officially determine the future direction of governance in West Bengal.
