
Jio Subscriber Additions Lead in August; BSNL Overtakes Airtel as Vi Continues to Lose Users
The Jio subscriber additions in August have once again demonstrated Reliance Jio’s dominance in India’s telecom market. In contrast, Vi lost 308,984 subscribers, marking yet another month of decline.
At the end of August, Jio had 479.45 million wireless users, maintaining a strong lead over Airtel’s 391.97 million, Vi’s 203.55 million, and BSNL’s 91.75 million. The steady Jio subscriber additions show how its consistent network expansion and affordable data plans continue to attract millions across India.

BSNL’s Comeback with 4G Expansion
One of the major highlights of the month was the resurgence of BSNL, which secured the second position in net additions. Analysts attribute this growth to BSNL’s nationwide 4G rollout, helping the state-run telecom giant regain customer confidence after years of stagnation.

Active Subscribers: Jio Maintains the Lead
According to an analysis by DAM Capital, Jio subscriber additions were not limited to total users — the company also led in active subscribers or VLR (Visitor Location Register) figures. In August, Jio added 2.3 million active users, while Airtel added 1.3 million. Vi’s active user losses, however, slowed to 0.1 million, showing minor improvement but no sign of full recovery.
This surge in active users strengthens Jio’s customer base quality, emphasizing its network reliability and service consistency.
Jio’s Broadband Expansion Gains Pace
Beyond wireless growth, Jio subscriber additions in the home broadband segment showed remarkable progress. Jio added 0.9 million broadband users in August, compared to Airtel’s 0.3 million.
Jio now commands a 40% share of India’s broadband market (up from 32% last year), while Airtel holds 21% (up from 19% year-on-year). The aggressive push for JioFiber and JioAirFiber services continues to strengthen its dominance in both urban and semi-urban markets.
M2M Connections See Record Additions
The month of August also saw a total of 5.1 million new M2M (Machine-to-Machine) connections — an emerging area in telecom that supports IoT (Internet of Things) growth. Airtel led this segment with 3.9 million new M2M connections, followed by Jio with 0.9 million and Vi with 0.2 million.
Although M2M is currently a low-revenue segment, its long-term potential is significant. DAM Capital noted that Airtel currently leads with a 59% market share in M2M, while Jio, Vi, and BSNL hold 18%, 19%, and 4%, respectively.
Porting Requests Reflect Intense Competition
The TRAI report also highlighted that 15.1 million porting requests were received in August — one of the highest in recent times. Analysts interpret this as an indicator of fierce competition at the ground level, as users switch operators for better network quality, data speed, or customer service.
Airtel and Jio remain the preferred destinations for users porting from smaller or struggling networks. The consistent Jio subscriber additions show that its reputation for affordability and reliability continues to attract migrating users.
Analysts’ Outlook: Jio Ahead, Airtel Resilient, Vi Under Pressure
Industry analysts remain optimistic about Jio’s sustained growth trajectory. The company’s ongoing 5G expansion, coupled with strong broadband performance, is expected to keep its momentum intact.
Airtel, while growing at a slower pace, continues to maintain a high-value customer base with better ARPU figures, especially from postpaid and enterprise users.
On the other hand, Vi remains in a critical phase, struggling to retain users amid financial constraints and delayed network upgrades. Without major investment or strategic partnerships, its decline may persist in the coming months.
